Our Family’s Imperfect Christmas Preparations

“For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses – as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.)” Hebrews 3:3-4

I don’t know about you … but each year I envision what my family will “look like” as we get ready for Christmas:

  • Joyfully sitting around a fire in the fireplace
  • Focusing on the Scriptures pertaining to Christ’s birth
  • Cheerfully decorating the house together

This picture-perfect holiday scene is hardly reality in my home. Don’t get me wrong… we try… but we are horribly, terribly and imperfectly… human.

A more fitting picture of preparing my home for Christmas looks a bit more like this:

  • Having to turn ON the AIR CONDITIONING so that we can have a fire in the fireplace.
  • Being several days behind on our Jesse Tree readings – so we have to do 3 or 4 a day to catch up
  • Our decorating is often done in stages… as time allows… and sometimes we accidentally forget to put out the Nativity Scene.

Hardly the picture I have so often “envisioned” and desired for my home.

So imagine my surprise this year, while we were decorating for Christmas, to have Bear (my second son), look at me and say, “Mom…how did you guys get all this stuff?”

“What ‘stuff’ are you talking about?” I replied.

“These decorations,” he clarified, “I love the way our home feels at Christmas … and I would want my home to feel this way one day … but I wouldn’t even know where to start.”

Really? Wow! How sweet!

Each year as I failed to meet my own expectations, some how we were still building heritage.

“The decorations in our home,” I told him,”The truth is, they came from love and time.”

Love and time is what has put any and all decorations in our home.

Love … we have for the Lord and each other
Love … family heirlooms handed down to ours
Time … as our own family grew
Time … that we have together
Love and Time … all our memories we have built and accumulated together throughout the years

The point is … I didn’t go out and have a grand shopping spree to decorate my home. No, the Lord decorated it … He decorated it one piece … one memory at a time.

So my sweet Sisters, whatever decorations you have (or do not have) in your home this Christmas Season … it is the love of the Lord, the warmth of your family, and the memories together that are the true décor.

And if your “picture-perfect” image is not looking just as you desire … do not fret, do not give up … You are STILL BUILDING HERITAGE – and the Lord is the Builder!

Christmas Countdown

Father God, we lay our expectations at your feet. We open our hearts and our homes for you to come build the heritage YOU desire. In your merciful Name we pray, Amen.

This is a repost from last year… amazing how it’s still so applicable this year!  Good news though, this year we managed to get the Nativity scene out!  Yay!

Blessings to you and yours!
